Perceiving a metaphor is an immersive experience which will be successful only if the audience allow themselves to believe in the illusion created by the figure of speech – in other words, to immerse themselves in the fiction induced by the metaphor – while maintaining the necessary distance not to take the figure literally. This dialectical process inherent in the reception of the metaphor therefore requires a subtle balance between immersion and detachment. Yet, in Twelfth Night, Shakespeare plays upon this fragile balance. Whether it be metaphors taken literally, misunderstandings or simply a failure to grasp the meaning of a trope, in Shakespeare’s play, these “malfunctions” in the reception of the figure are not insignificant. On the contrary, they serve as a springboard for new discursive games. The playwright thus succeeds in staging the functioning of the metaphor as an immersive experience whilst triggering laughter.
