<title>Shame and Humiliation on the Contemporary Stage: Playing Malvolio/a in the 21st century</title>
      <link>https://shakespeare.edel.univ-poitiers.fr:443/shakespeare/index.php?id=3405</link>
<description>This article reflects on two contemporary productions of Twelfth Night: La Nuit des rois, by Thomas Ostermeier at the Comédie Française (2019), and Twelfth Night by Simon Godwin at the National Theatre (2017). It especially focuses on the character of Malvolio (Malvolia in Godwin’s production) and the way shame and humiliation are represented on stage. It also wonders about the effect of the character’s mistreatment on the audience. First cast in the role of accomplices, spectators are indeed left with unease as the gulling of Malvolio turns to abuse. How is the character of Malvolio/a interpreted in both productions? To what end? What kind of relationship with the audience is programmed by the uneasiness created by the treatment of Malvolio/a? This study is based on a close analysis of both productions, and on their representation of Malvolio/a in a manner that weakens the play’s comedic tone. Dans quel but ? </description>
