Depuis son titre emprunté directement à l’Arcadie, jusqu’à sa fin tronquée, l’Uranie tout entière  est construite comme un hommage au roman de Sidney. Wroth développe des stratégies d’écriture qui, de l’emprunt à la réécriture en passant par la réorganisation du texte originel, créent une tension paradoxale entre imitation et recherche de l’originalité. La pratique de l’imitation, loin d’étouffer la création littéraire, en devient la source même, car Wroth dérive sa propre créativité d’une fine lecture de l’Arcadie. Ce faisant, elle affirme non seulement sa propre « vision maniériste » (Gisèle Mathieu-Castellani), mais révèle ainsi celle de Sidney. Mary Wroth’s romance The Countess of Montgomery’s Urania was clearly inspired by her uncle Philip Sidney’s The Countess of Pembroke’s Arcadia (1590). The title of Wroth’s romance itself pays a direct homage to Sidney’s. The Urania is not only riddled with individual allusions to Sidney’s text, but is built upon the imitation of episodes and characteristics of the Arcadia, such as its unfinished ending. Imitation should not be seen as the opposite of original creation, for Wroth derives her own creativity from her intelligent reading of the Arcadia. In doing so, she not only affirms her « mannerist vision » (Gisèle Mathieu-Castellani), but also reveals Sidney’s own. Shakespeare en devenir N°6 — 2012 I.
