Elle est une réécriture de la pièce shakespearienne, dont le lieu principal devient Soweto, fondant la haine des familles Capulet et Montaigu sur le racisme. L'enjeu de la réécriture sonyenne est bien politique puisque la symbolique de la tragédie shakespearienne, centrée sur le rôle de la fortune qui poursuit les deux amants, laisse place à une réflexion sur le sacrifice de ces derniers. Mais, à l'ère du capitalisme et de l'immense gâchis planétaire, le sacrifice des amants peut-t-il être utile ? C'est l'espoir que porte un projet théâtral qui, en 2010, met en scène la pièce de Sony Labou Tansi en faisant jouer vingt-quatre lycéens français et sénégalais sur l'Île de Gorée. Le documentaire de Grégory Hiétin, Roméo et Juliette, les amants de Gorée, retrace les étapes de la réalisation de ce projet. The Red and White Resurrection of Romeo and Juliet is a play written between 1988 and 1990 by the Congolese playwright Sony Labou Tansi. It is a rewriting of the Shakespearean play, where the main place becomes Soweto, which bases the Capulets’ and Montagues’ hatred on the theme of racism. The goal of this rewriting is political: in the Shakespearian tragedy, Misfortune threatens the two lovers and leads them to an unfair death, while the play of Sony offers a reflection on the sacrifice of Romeo and Juliet. However, in the age of capitalism and the huge ecological waste, can the lovers’ sacrifice be useful? This is the hope of a theatrical project that staged Tansi’s tragedy with twenty-four French and Senegalese students, on Gorée Island in 2010.
